Mullingar-Navan u14 girls premier league match

Mullingar 27-Navan 10

Navan were away to Mullingar last Saturday at 10.45.  Navan started brightly, holding Mullingar in their own 22 for the first five minutes. Then, Mullingar scored a try from deep in their own half. Five minutes later Mullingar scored again bringing it to 10 to 0. Ava Galvin made good ground and it looked like Navan might score but a knock-on at the breakdown handed the advantage to Mullingar who scored another try, this time converted. Navan, once again battled their way up the pitch, only to have the ball turned over and Mullingar getting another breakaway try.

In the last minutes of the first half, Navan eventually got on the scoreboard with Cara Martin, Lauren Fitzpatrick, Ally Cullivan and Steffi Finnegan all making ground, with Rosie Searle eventually grounding the ball. 22-5 going in a half time.

The second half saw Navan come out fighting but once again Mullingar upset their plans with a try early on. After several phases of play, Ellen Birmingham ran around the opposition to get Navan’s second try. Navan kept at it with strong runs from Ciara Rennie and Ava Galvin but each time things just wouldn’t go our way. The game finished at 27-10 to the home side.

Anna Hilliard and Sarah Leonard both made some crunching tackles and carried ball well. Leah Morris, Ally Cullivan and Lauren Fitzpatrick, all had big performances. Ciara Rennie made a huge impression at the front of the lineout robbing opposition ball at least three times. But, Ava Galvin gets Navan Woman of the Match for some great tackling in the first half as well as carrying well anytime she got the ball.

The squad that travelled to Mullingar were: Ciara Rennie, Lauren FitzPatrick(capt), Niamh McSharry, Emilie O’Brien, Ally Cullivan, Roisin Watters, Anna Hilliard, Jade Gaffney, Leah Morris, Cara Martin, Sarah Leonard, Ellen Birmingham, Ava Galvin, Rosie Searle, Steffi Finnegan, Ava Purcell, Roisin Cullen, Maebh Mills and Lilly O’Dwyer.

A disappointing result, but it will only spur us on to do better in our next match against Cill Dara/Newbridge on the third of February.
