WRWC rugby tour
Last Saturday, the girls u14 team headed to Belfast, for a blitz in Malone RFC and then on to Kingspan for the final games of the Womens Rugby World Cup. The u16 girls joined them. Including parents and coaches, we had almost fifty on the bus at eight in the morning.
The girls played four matches. First was Malone who were dispatched three tries to one. Next up was Portarlington who broke our fourteen match unbeaten run five tries to one. But the girls rallied and beat Ballina/Fethard four tries to three in a tight fought match. The last match was a little easier with us beating Donaghdee four tries to none. Try scorers for Navan included Anna Hilliard(5), Cara Martin(3), Leah Morris(1), Lauren FitzPatrick(1), Steffi Finnegan(1), Ally Cullivan (1), Sarah Molloy(1) . Rosie Searle, Niamh McSharry, Maedbh Mills and Kate O Reilly made up the squad.
We had just time to get from Malone to Kingspan for the Ireland v Wales play off game. Kate O Reilly had the honour of leading out the Welsh team as their Aldi mascot. Unfortunately the Irish team were beaten.
We headed into Belfast for lunch during the French match. Some of the parents managed to disappear.
Back in time for the final and what a match it was. England started off strong but New Zealand were just too good. A match as good as any men’s match. Most of the girls at this stage had black fern facepaint. Russell wasn’t too impressed.
The highlight of the day, I think was when the Irish team joined us in the stand for the final. They signed autographs, posed for selfies and high fived the Navan girls at every opportunity. It’s a pity they didn’t perform better in the world cup but they were heroes nonetheless to our lot.
We eventually arrived back in Navan after midnight tired but happy.
