Navan V Athy U14 Girls premier league 9/12/17

Navan 27- Athy 17

Navan girls hosted Athy on Saturday in their latest premier match. Once again, we had a squad of nineteen. It was a harsh morning with frost and ice still on the pitch for the eleven o’ clock kick-off.

Athy, opened the scoring, with a try early on soon to be answered by Anna Hilliard bringing it to 5 points apiece. Next up, was a try from Cara Martin, converted by Abby Moyles, bringing score to 12-5. Ciara Rennie brought it to 17-5 at the halfway mark. She was unlucky not to add another later in the game. Steffi Finnegan had a great game, breaking three or four tackles to make forty meters at one stage.

Athy, however refused to lie down and scored two quick tries in the second-half, one converted, bringing the score to 17 apiece with nine minutes to go. Ally Cullivan was first to react, crossing the line, only to be held up, resulting in a five-yard scrum.  Relentless pressure from Navan led to Rosie Searle scoring a try and Anna Hilliard sealed the result with her second try of the day.  Final score Navan 27 Athy 17.

Jade Gaffney, played most of the match at number nine. Roisin Cullen, started at first centre and moved into the forwards in the second half to make room for Sarah Leonard. We have a wealth of talent and it was great to be able to play them all. Also playing, were Alicia Kavanagh, Leah Morris, Ellen Birmingham, Lilly O’ Dwyer, Sasha Guirey, Roisin Watters, Ava Galvin, Ava Purcell and Lauren FitzPatrick.

Rosie Searle, has been improving all season and is woman of the match for Saturday. She carried ball quite a bit, defended well and was instrumental in the win with her try. Well done all. Next game is on the 13th January away to Mullingar.
